AAAS (Friends of the Animals) Newsletter for May 2010
A brief overview of how things are at the Thrift Store
The Thrift Store is working well and is providing
a steady income for the AAAS
We had more tourists visiting in March so takings
were higher at that time and they were our biggest customers
then. Now 60% of our sales are residents, 20% volunteers and
l would say the other 20% are tourists. I have seen a drop
in customers over the past months
The phone number for Thrift Store is 809-715-6506
The Information Board situated behind the desk could definitely
use an updated adoption and doggy fostering wish list and
we would like to assign someone the job of keeping this particular
job updated. Any volunteers who have the resources to undertake
this task? The board also contains a wish list for our current
projects
A page has been set up on Facebook, AAAS Thrift
Store, and to date, we have 20 members. Large and high value
items which are not necessarily in the Thrift Store will be
put onto the Facebook page and members sent a message to view
photos of these items
An appeal for the beach dogs of Cabarete
As everyone knows, Tom and Tanya do a fantastic job and look
after literally hundreds of street and beach dogs in their
own environment. The time has now come when they are on complete
overload and just don’t have enough hours in the week
to complete their tasks so they are appealing for some help
and assistance.
They currently regularly give Ivermectin and are hoping that
someone will come forward and offer to take over the distribution
to the Cabarete beach dogs. The task is to go from Viva Tangerine
Resort east to the end of the main Cabarete beach. It takes
about 2 hours (maximum) and there are about 20 dogs. The best
and easiest time to do it is about 4 pm as most of the dogs
are there and it is not too hot then. Please get in touch
if you are prepared to undertake this job.....
AAAS would love a trailer
like this

AAAS have the opportunity to buy this trailer - cost will
be in the region of US$ 3500 so there is a great fund raising
cause for AAAS - and the trailer will be able to be used to
transport all the necessary equipment for the ‘field
clinics’
Lovely tale of Cassidy with a great happy
ending.....
Great photo of Cassidy as he gets ready to travel to his wonderful
new home –

Last winter we had visitors from Ontario, Canada arrive in our
complex. They quickly became friends. At the same time, we had
a visiting dog, we had seen him over a couple of years and, noticed
a few months ago, that he had injured a front ankle/paw.
He is a lovely boy, kind and gentle and so handsome, therefore
it was easy to provide him with the attention he so wanted.
We believe that he was the puppy of another dog in our complex
who had wormed her way into many hearts and found a permanent
home here!!! News travels fast in the animal world!!! Our new
friends fell in love with him and named him Cassidy, as in ‘hop-a-long’
for those of us old enough to remember that TV show!! The wife
of the couple was determined to take him home with her and went
on a campaign to win her husband over!!! She is a great lady and
quickly won! I don't think there was much resistance. So begins
Cassidy's journey. He was x rayed, neutered, given all his vaccinations,
and then he had to wait....
His new “parents” had to leave without him because
of the time wait for the rabies shot! The next hurdle was the
flying restriction after March 31. Several sites had posts looking
for guardians for Cassidy. A wonderful stranger, (soon to be friend),
volunteered after she had meet with his Mom! On the DR side, many
people worked to make this possible. A crate at a great price,
the terrific people at Dr. Bob's and Judy's Pet Lodge, all had
a hand in his rest & recovery, while getting him ready to
go. We visited Cassidy but made the decision not to bring him
home with us as I was actually afraid that if I did, I might not
let him go!!!! Also, I didn't want him confused yet again about
where he lived!
So on March 26th, we arrived to pick him up and off to the airport
we went, met his guardian angels, and entertained and delighted
many people at the airport. My vaulting the weight scale was apparently
amusing, small crate hitch... none of which fazed this young dog.
He arrived in a cold Ontario, and greeted his new parents with
all the love and devotion he has!! Settled right into their home
as if it has been his forever!!! He also found his voice when
he went to the cottage and discovered squirrels!!! Surprising
not only himself but his parents and the squirrels!!!
In the midst of all these preparations, his new Mom, had her Mother
pass away unexpectedly. Cassidy brought a ray of light and love
into many lives who needed his spirit
I get regular updates and photos from Ontario, and he has indeed
settled in... draped across his Dad's lap reading the morning
paper!!!
I hope perhaps this will give people thought that taking your
"foster" dog home, can be done, and adds so much to
both lives. Thanks to all who had a part in making this happen
for everyone.

Visiting vets
Contribution from Bruce and Cary:
We have veterinarian, Claire, and her assistant, Jennifer, arriving
from Canada on 4th June for a couple of weeks plus, Elise, a vet
student from the UK. Claire’s husband will be tagging along
but has other things to do whilst here! We are glad to have them
all stay at Villa Samia, helping AAAS with the lodging. At Villa
Samia, we are still fostering Whiskers and looking for a good
home for her. She is spayed (thanks to AAAS), about 6 months old
now and a little homely looking but she is fun and full of energy
and has fitted in well with our 2 other AAAS dogs and 2 cats –
maybe Cary won’t let her go now!!
Winnie needs a new home as soon as possible...

Through no fault of her own, this beautiful 3 year old Dobermann
female (spayed, inoculated and wormed up to date) urgently needs
to be adopted. She gets on well with people and children, plays
with other dogs but is not keen on cats! She has had good obedience
training and is house-trained and car-trained. She is currently
‘on holiday’ at the Pet Lodge but needs a new permanent
home quickly – see her on our website along with other adoptions
and rehomings
On a more general note
Dogs are interesting creatures - - the love and companionship
that they show us never ceases to amaze me. And if you watch your
dog carefully, there are many things he can teach you.
For example ...
Be direct with people - if you are happy, let it show
Always leave room in your schedule for a nap
Always give people a friendly greeting
Don't ever leave home without your ID
A real kiss is always sloppy and wet
Always take time to smell the roses (and trees, rocks, grass,
fire hydrants, plants...)
If you stare at someone long enough, you'll get some sort of attention
Be careful where you put your tongue!
Reminder to all volunteers or wannabe
volunteers
There is a meeting on Thursday, 3rd June at the El Choco restaurant
in Sosua at 10.30 am. Hope to see as many as possible there for
an informal get-together and planning meeting
Please don’t wait for reminders regarding items for the
next newsletter – if you have some news of interest, send
it to info@aaasosua.com
at any time for inclusion in the next edition – placing
“Newsletter” as the subject title. Thanks to all for
their contributions.
